The earliest historical records of the link between namazu<\/em> and earthquakes is from the end of the 16th century.<\/strong>It is known that this belief was maintained over the centuries because it every time there was a strong earthquake, large quantities of woodblock prints inspired by the giant catfish were sold. <\/strong>and other catfish in the most varied scenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This style of visual production is known for namazu-e<\/em><\/strong>and is a subgenre of the ukiyo-e<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In these engravings, images of catfish wearing kimonos and walking like people are common.<\/strong>. Some come out smoking or with bottles or glasses of sake<\/em>. This is why I wanted to draw a drunken catfish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In my illustration, you can see the namazu <\/em>walking contentedly with his bottle <\/strong>pumpkin (hyotan<\/em>) and wears a kimono printed with the figure of the same bottle.<\/strong>. It should be recalled that these bottles were often used to carry sake<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
