What is a oni<\/em>?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Oni<\/a><\/em> are powerful supernatural creatures from Japanese mythology. They are said to eat human flesh and are expert torturers. They have a violent character and an appearance similar to that of demons or ogres. Even so, they are not always evil, some even help people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The origin of the word oni<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
The oni<\/a><\/em> is one of the yokai<\/a><\/em> older and more famous, although everything points to the fact that he does not want to be seen.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Probably the word oni<\/a><\/em> (demon) guard relation to the Japanese term on<\/em>which means hidden, or that which does not allow itself to be seen.<\/strong>. The first use of this word referred to those who did not obey the imperial court. It was also used to refer to foreigners, unknown people. Later, the same term began to be applied generically to disease-bearing gods and other beasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The physical appearance of the oni<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The image most associated with the oni<\/a><\/em> is that of a muscular humanoid creature with horns, claws and fangs, similar to western ogres or demons<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their skin can have a varied range of colors, being more common green, red, blue and black. Also common are representations where they wear tiger skins and carry an iron club as a weapon (kanabo<\/a><\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It seems that this well-known description of the oni<\/a> <\/em>became popular in the Edo period (1603-1868), although it any supernatural creature that cannot be classified as a particular yokai<\/a><\/em> and that looks malicious will be taken by one of them<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is important to note that these beings have the power to change their appearance<\/strong>There are stories where they adopt human form or that of an object.<\/p>\n\n\n

The character of the oni<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

These beings have been present in the history of Japan since primitive times. It is said that eat human flesh<\/strong> and are expert torturers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Heian period (794-1185), they were considered to be cause of all kinds of misfortunes<\/strong>from natural disasters to epidemics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Buddhism<\/a> are in charge of supervising the hell<\/strong> and make use of their well-known skills. They are strong, intelligent and aggressive. But as you might expect, no matter how powerful they are, they can never defeat a buddha<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Common in Buddhist imagery are scenes in which a oni<\/a><\/em> appears subjugated under the feet of some god.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite all the bad reputation they have, not all are bad<\/strong>. In many stories they help people or scare away evil spirits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
