« Back to Glossary Index Daikoku o Daikokuten is one of the seven gods of fortune. He was assimilated from the Buddhist pantheon and is the god of abundance and wealth, patron of merchants and peasants.
Daikokuten 1806Daikokuten sits on bales of rice while holding his magic money mallet. Before him sits a young boy holding up a toy boat. The mice, bales of rice and the large bag of goodies are all symbols of abundance and prosperity relating to this 'Santa Claus' of Japan.
