« Back to Glossary IndexThe nishiki-e (brocade printing) is a type of Japanese woodcut printing with multiple colors, a technique used primarily in the ukiyo-e.
It was invented in the 1760s, by the engraver Suzuki Harunobu.
Before this technique existed, most engravings were in black and white, or hand-colored or with the addition of one or two blocks of colored ink.
