Nō or Noh is a Japanese performing art based on traditional tales. It is a theater in the form of musical drama.
It has its origins in the sarugaku no nōa form of spectacle that encompasses various performing arts and in the kaguraancient Shinto ceremony.
As the centuries passed, Japanese theater branched out and this style of elegant and refined lyrical drama adapted for aristocratic audiences developed in the period Muromachi (1336-1573).
Its authorship is due to Motokiyo Zeami (1363-1443), an actor who, like his father, has the support of the shogunate. The history of the Nō theater has been linked to its relationship with power ever since.
