The earliest historical records of the link between namazu and earthquakes is from the end of the 16th century.It is known that this belief was maintained over the centuries because it every time there was a strong earthquake, large quantities of woodblock prints inspired by the giant catfish were sold. and other catfish in the most varied scenes.
This style of visual production is known for namazu-eand is a subgenre of the ukiyo-e.
Among the most widespread representations are Kashima holding the sacred rock over the head of the namazuThe fish of enormous dimensions, and often other characters try to subdue it with great difficulty. Sometimes there are also some other persimmon instead of Kashimaas Ebisu o Daikoku.
There is another well-known scene that is very similar. to that of Kashima y namazuit is a question of a small monkey trying to subdue the giant catfish with a huge bottle of pumpkin (hyotan) instead of the divine rock.
I wanted to make my own version of this funny scene. which is repeated in so many engravings and sculptures. I was looking for more data about what it represents, but I could not find anything, even in books that specially tried to analyze the namazu-e.
