Bushido means 'the way of the warrior' and is a well-known military code describing the principles of honor and loyalty that warriors of the military class of feudal Japan (c. 1185-1603) are said to have followed.
This code of conduct idealizes the act of being loyal to death to one's superiors and sacrificing one's life without hesitation. It also emphasizes constant and severe physical training with the sword and the use of Zen discipline to develop character, self-control and confidence.
According to R. Ibarzabal, it was not until the era of the Edo (1603-1868) when the authorities were interested in promoting samurai values. The concept bushido that we know today is from the late nineteenth century and rather than a real vision of the samurai, it is a romantic and idealized version of these ancient warriors.
