In the Gifu city - Japan, in 1933 Kazuo Oguri was born, now an institution in the world of Japanese tattooing.
He moved to Tokyo at the age of 20 to study traditional Japanese tattooing for 5 years with Hideo Murai, the Tokyo Horihide. Then he returns to his hometown already trained as a tattoo artist and adopts the name of Gifu Horihide (Horihide of Gifu).
He is credited with being the first Japanese tattoo artist after World War II to travel to the United States. It was in 1970, to travel around the country and meet the great Sailor Jerry. With him he has shared the technique and history of Tebori, reintroducing the traditional Japanese tattoo in the western culture.
Since then, other prominent artists like Ed Hardy, Zeke Owen, and Mike Malone have studied the horimono with him.
Undoubtedly, his contributions to the advancement of tattooing are recognized worldwide by the most respected artists.
